Suavenomics at it’s Finest! (ENDED)
The winner is #180 Rhonda Martin!
A couple of months ago Suave contacted me with a challenge regarding something they called Suavenomics. Since we are all paying extra close attention to the state of our economics here in the US, Suave wants to let everyone know that they can get great value for their dollar without sacrificing on quality.
From the website:
In 2008, Americans could have saved more than $5.5 billion by buying Suave beauty products instead of more expensive brands.
For over 70 years, the Suave brand has bottled our belief that you can live beautifully for less. It’s a belief we call Suavenomics and it’s easy to apply to your every life. Clip a coupon. Hit a shoe sale. Squeeze more joy out of every dollar. This is no time to give up on your hopes, your dreams or your beauty. This is time to stop overpaying for them.
Live beautifully for less. SUAVENOMICS.
So Suave sent me a whole box full of products to put to the test. Some were theirs and some were the higher priced competition. The competitor brands that they sent run considerably higher – often double the price – than Suave.
So is a picture of everything I received:
And the competitors are:
Suave Humectant Shampoo & Conditioner VS Nexxus Humectress Shampoo & Conditioner
Suave Freeze Hold Shaping & Finishing Hairspray VS Sebastian Spritz Forte Hairspray
Suave Advanced Therapy Moisturizing Lotion VS Jergens Cherry-Almond Moisturizer.
Suave Naturals Sweet Pea & Violet Body Wash VS Bath & Body Works Pleasures Sweet Pea Shower Gel.
Suave 24 Hr. Protection Sweet Pea & Violet Invisible Solid Deodorant VS my regular deodorant – Secret Flawless Invisible Solid
And the results are:
Shampoo & Conditioner:
I admit it…I am a Shampoo ‘ho. That’s right. I will try just about anybody’s shampoo, at least once. So comparing the Suave Humectant and the Nexxus Humectress was theoretically no big deal, right? Wrong! I have to say, I LOVED the way the Nexxus shampoo smelled and I did think it worked well but better than the Suave? No way! Certainly not when the price difference was about $6.
As for the conditioners, well, this is where I get a bit more selective. See, my hair is very fine and soft but I have enough curl and enough volume of hair that it can very easily get frizzy, especially in the lovely Texas humidity. I have learned that I do need to condition my hair most of the time. However, if I use the wrong type of conditioner, it just weighs my hair down and I end up looking more like a grease head than anything else. So I tried the two conditioners – the Suave on one day and the Nexxus the next. Just to be fair on Day 3, I tried one on one side of my head and one on the other. The Suave brand conditioner actually conditioned my hair just right…left it soft yet controlled and non-frizzy. The Nexxus on the other hand, left me a grease ball! Well, so much for the NExxus!
Hairspray:
Hairspray is another area where I have to be careful. If the hairspray is too lightweight, it really doesn’t hold but if it is too heavy, well, it becomes a football helmet. The Suave hairspray was perfect…just the right amount of firmness. I will say that while the Sebastian might have been fine with a different delivery system, when I tried to use it, so much of it came out at once that it was like glue in some places and like there had been no spray in others. I had no use for that, you can be sure! And again, the price difference was large…$10 difference. No thanks!
Moisturizing Lotion:
This was a toughie. I knew ahead of time that J’adore the smell of the Jergens lotion and that was going to be a hard thing to overcome. But I was fair and I gave them both a good try, factoring out the scent bias as much as possible. In the end, I have to say that I really liked the Suave pump and the lotion itself was a wonderfully creamy texture without leaving your hands greasy. I liked the Jergens texture and absorption but I felt the Suave was a little creamier and perhaps more hydrating. End result? With the scent factor (not that the Suave was at all unpleasant), it was just about a tie…except the Jergen’s cost twice as much and most of the time, I would choose the lower cost.
Body Wash:
Ahhh, Bath and Bodyworks. I love that store. I really do and while the Sweet Pea is not my favorite selection, I do not dislike it either. I started this test a bit biased too because I found it hard to believe that the Suave shower gel could really match up in thickness of the gel nor compete in the scent. I was wrong on both accounts. The consistency of the gel was just about the same and much to my surprise, I actually found the Suave shower gel’s scent to be a little less cloying…maybe the addition of the Violet is what did it! Again, a significant price difference – $8..
Deodorant:
I went into the deodorant challenge firmly believing the Suave brand could not hold up as compared to the Secret. See, in the past I had used the Suave and found it to not control my sweat or stink (hey, I call ‘em as I see ‘em). I was pleasantly surprised that this one did! Now, it was winter and not the middle of a Texas summer (I will try it this summer and see) but you bet I would buy the Suave antiperspirant….and I LOVE the Sweet Pea scent!
The Bottom Line?
Seriously, with everyone of the products I tested, the Suave products were at least as good as, and in many cases, better than the other products. And being the frugal little soul that I can be, I just can’t justify paying more for products that I didn’t really like any better! Suavenomics at it’s finest!

I’ve always used Suave products – if I use anything else, it breaks me out. I haven’t tried the Suave Advanced Therapy Moisturizer, would be great for my dry/cracked hands.
Entered Kim’s “What’s That Smell” blog contest.
I’ve actually never used Suave products before but I would like to try the invisible solid deoderant. I currently use Degree clinical strength which costs a pretty penny.

I’d like to try Suave Professional Daily Moisture Conditioner. Right now I use DHC Head Conditioner which is a product from Japan. I love it. It doesn’t weigh down my hair and is not super $$$, but certainly more than Suave. Plus I have to mail order all their products as they only have two stores in the US.

I would love to try the Suave Professionals Extreme Strength Conditioner that strengths as well as Redken. I have absolutely no doubt that this product will do just that and not disappoint! I would replace this for my Biolage™ Color Care Conditioner which doesn’t really seem to be giving my hair much moisture and body anymore. I always buy suave products—They are usually under a dollar apiece. I would like to try the hair mous.
I just started using suave products and want to try the Suave Professional Daily Moisture Conditioner next. This will replace my matrix products.
My family loves Suave products, I especially love their deodorant.
