I told my son the "truth", and tempered it with the fact that Santa is a state of being. Now that he is old enough to know this truth he is now old enough to be a Santa. So, now we play Santa in a different way each year. We may have lost the illusion, but gained a new reality and a new tradition. Last year we did the "Angel Tree" and this year we sent stockings out for troops in Afghanistan. I also told him that by being a Santa, he helps to make a Christmas special for those that would otherwise not have a Christmas such as he has always known. After all, how many cannot afford to lavish their children with gifts? Especially lately. This way we help to make their Christmas a bit merrier. And really isn't that what Santa is all about? Made my eyes tear up. My little ones are only discovering Santa this year and they just love and adore him and anything with his picture on it.
