Family Fun Football for Wii
31 December 2009
As the only male in a house full of females, my wife asked me to play the new Family Fun Football game for Wii and let her know what I thought of it. Now, I love football, so I eagerly accepted the challenge.
This game was rated E for everyone by the ESRB. They described it as:
This is a football game in which players can select a team of “cartoony” children or mascots and compete in an entry-level football experience. Players can use power-ups (e.g., “Speed Boost” and “Strength Boost”) to increase their abilities and tackle opponents to prevent them from scoring. Tackles sometimes cause “dizzy stars” to appear over players’ heads or cause them to be comically flung high into the air. In one mini-game (“Bean the Mascots”), players can throw footballs at mascots that are scampering across the field.
What I liked about the game.
Family Fun Football is a simple game to play with kids ages 8 and up probably the target audience. Unlike my old Madden Football game, which required you be a pro at the controller just to play the game, this game is simple to play. Options included selecting the length of the quarters, for preteens 2 minutes is perfect per quarter, 5 for the more adult minded. You can choose to play single games or a season. The graphics are fun, and the mini-games at half time are a great diversion. My favorite is throwing the football at the player. (You’ll see what I mean when you get the game.)
What I didn’t like about the game.
The game does require nun chucks so it can be hard for smaller children to enjoy. My seven year old daughter found it frustrating trying to use both the nun chuck and regular wand and gave up quickly. I also found that run plays almost never work and so the game requires lots of passing to score. Luckily, mastering that pass is pretty straight forward.
As with all games, you will enjoy it more if you read the manual. Men, I am talking to you.
For hard-core gamers and football aficionados, this game will be too simplistic. For the casual gamer who wants to play football within having to master the controls first, this is a good game. That is me and I would recommend it.
