This Giveaway is closed.  Congratulations to #120 Colette!

Thanks to everyone who participated!  Watch for more great products in 2010!

One of the most important decisions you can make for the safety and comfort of your child is which car seat to purchase. There are so many choices that it can seem daunting and confusing. As the mother of two, a six year old and a two year old, I have had my fair share of experience with different car seats and while safety is my number one concern, I have learned that every seat is different.

triumphadvanced Evenflo Triumph Advance LX Convertible Car Seat review & giveaway(Ended)The Evenflo Triumph Advanced LX Convertible Car Seat meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards, in fact it has been designed and tested for structural integrity at energy levels approx. 2X the federal crash test standard. It has also been side impact tested using a test protocol developed by Evenflo engineers to simulate the energy in the severe 5 star government side impact tests conducted for automobiles. There are currently no provisions in the US or Canada for side impact car seat testing, but because Evenflo considers car seat safety a top priority, they created a side impact test program for their car seats.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance has also been rated the #1 convertible car seat for performance and price by a leading consumer magazine in 2009.

I was recently approached by Evenflo to review the Triumph Advance XL Convertible Car seat. I had never actually used an Evenflo Car Seat for my kids, so I was curious to be able to test it out. They sent me the Triumph Advance in the “Cocoa Fizz” pattern.

  • Read all instructions and warnings on the product, product labels, and instruction manuals before use. Consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine proper placement of child restraint in your vehicle and familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s components.
  • Machine wash pad with mild detergent, cold water, and gentle cycle

My Thoughts

Pros:

Infinite Slide Harness – I honestly didn’t expect to like this feature. It it unusual because traditionally the shoulder straps sit at a fixed height (that you increase with some difficulty as the child gets older). The infinite slide harness makes it easy to get the perfect fit for your child, quickly and easily.

TensionRight knobs – This feature makes it so much easier to get just the right tension and snugness in the harness straps. Gone are the days when you pull too hard on the strap and make it too tight, or have to fumble to find the latch to release the tension. This knob, and it’s release make it easy to get a perfect tightness to the straps for maximum safety.

Roomy – This seat goes up to a weight of 50lbs (my son is almost six and barely 50lbs) so it should last quite a few years and it is roomy enough to very comfortably accommodate kids up to that weight.

Removable cover – The cover seems really easy to remove for washing (I did not try to remove it yet however) which is a major plus when you don’t have to disassemble the entire seat to get the cover off.

Chest clip is difficult for child to unclip but not for adult – My daughter can get out of the top clip on other car seats. She is apparently fairly nimble and can get them undone. The Evenflo Advance is rather clever with the chest clip because instead of just having to squeeze the top and bottom to get it undone, the buttons for the clip don’t line up directly, so you have to squeeze but sort of on an angle so it is more difficult and she can’t get it undone. (note: the chest clip on the seat we received is different than the one pictured above)

Cons:

Fold-down cup holder – The cup holder really seems flimsy and like an after-thought to me on this seat. My kids think it is fun to make it a game. Abby flips it down in the open position, Jake flips it back up, then they both giggle and repeat. It also isn’t designed to make it easy for a toddler to get the cup into it either. We have just been putting Abby’s cup on the seat next to her.

Latch tether strap on the back – The latch tether strap that goes over the back of the seat and down behind it to the built-in latch hooks in my van is too short. I could barely get it hooked and then when I did there was hardly any fabric left for me to be able to pull the strap tight.

Summary:

Overall I really do like the seat. The fabric is soft, and the seat itself is well padded and appears to be comfortable. While, I’m not in love with the color and pattern on the fabric, that is of such minor importance when all things are considered, that I don’t even notice it anymore.

The pros greatly outweigh the cons for us (because I did get the rear tether secure and tightened with some effort) and Abby seems comfortable and happy and most of all safe.

It means I can continue to use the seat as baby grows, and it won’t become obsolete, forcing me to buy yet another carseat. I also love the cup holder that folds away.

The adjustable side harness is a great feature. I remember having to constantly take my older son’s carseat apart every time he grew a few inches. With my second one, this would definitely be a step up!

I love the Tension Right knobs. I have always struggled with adjusting the seatbelt so this would be fantastic!

I love that it is good up to 50 pounds. Too many car seats do not grow with the child.

Of course I appreciate the safety features, and conveniences, but what really made me go woo hoo! is that the cover can be removed and washed. On the one we have, it cannot, and all I can say is aaaaargh!!!!

For me the most important feature is that the car seat Meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards. It far exceeds any physical appealing features about the car seat. I feel confident that when my son is in this car seat he will be safe while I am driving.
    Thanks for the giveaway

My favorite feature is that it’s weight capacity is 50 pounds forward facing. Keeps my kid safer for longer. I also like the fabric selection – usually you only get a few but here you have 7!
