Did Ya Know That It’s FIRE PREVENTION WEEK?

7 October 2009

Daddy with me firetruck 1967 Huh? Did ya?  Well, it is.  In fact, the first week of October is ALWAYS Fire Prevention week.  And yes, that is me over there in one of my favorite dresses at about age 2 sitting up like a really cool kidlet in the big fire engine at City of Vernon Fire Department with my Daddy.  Not only was he part of the Engine Crew for many years, going on to become the Captain and then moving from Fire Suppression to Fire Prevention.  (Can ya tell I am just a little bit proud?)

Anywho, I have 3 favorite memories of when my Dad worked there ~

1) When he picked me up from Preschool in the ‘Fire Car’ and let me turn the lights on for my friends to see – boy howdy was I cool then!

2) When I got to go and visit him at the station and be his ’secretary’.  I LOVED to rearrange his desk for him – a HUGE help I am sure.:)

3) Watching the Fire Prevention films with Jiminy Cricket singing, “…and I play safe for you and me ‘cuz I’m no fool!” and then crazy Donald Duck who always plugged in too many electrical devices for one plug.  (Please tell me I am NOT the only one who remembers those??) (and SURELY there HAS to be a way to buy them OTHER than the UK PLATINUM RELEASE OF PINOCCHIO!!!!!? – well guess what – there is!

Timon & Pumbaa SAFETY SMART about Fire

Timon & Pumbaa SAFETY SMART about Fire

And guess what else – Disney, with the help of Underwriters Laboratories has created a new fire safety DVD. I was so excited to see it!  Right now, Disney’s WILD About SAFETY where Timon & Pumbaa are SAFETY SMART About Fire is really only available for pre-order, and will ship on 11/16/09.  But for YOU, my awesome friends & readers, I want to invite you to the national online preview at www.safetysmartdvd.com throughout the month October!

The film is only about 12 minutes long and with the humor of “The Lion King’s” Timon and Pumbaa” parents and children can help understand what to do in a fire emergency. “Get down, get out and stay out!” is one of the lessons Timon and Pumbaa share. From smoke alarms, fire escape plans and preventative measures such as not playing with matches, Timon and Pumbaa review their Safety Smart® Checklist full of valuable and life-saving fire safety information.

As this is an educational film, it is available in English, Spanish, Castilian, Chinese, Danish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Marathi, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tamil.  Wow!

Along with this great DVD, they have also added some other DVD’s on being Safety Smart at home, Being Safety Smart while Going Green plus a couple from Bill Nye the Science Guy on Electricty and Fire.

I am so glad there are fun and educational films like these available for my kids to learn from just like my parents did for me when I was little – STOP, DROP, and ROLL quite literally saved my life several years ago and although my clothes were on fire, I could hear my Dad telling me as if he were in the room to STOP, DROP, and ROLL.

Thank you Underwriters Laboratories and Disney for helping teach a new generation.  And Parents, please, PLEASE, teach your children…it may save their lives too!

I loved this post, for nothing more than the memory of you and your father at the station reminded me of when I used to visit my dad at his station (NoCal). Made me super nostalgic. Thanks for the memories!
