520,000 in American Foster Care – Can You Help? Giveaway & Review (Ended)

22 December 2009
Nat Adoption Month 300x277 520,000 in American Foster Care Can You Help? Giveaway & Review (Ended)

This contest has closed and the winners are announced HERE.

Thanks to everyone whoo enjoyed our little inpromptu giveaway!  Watch for our Mother’s Day one in April!

Yes, I realize that November has passed and thus ended  National Adoption Month but I have a few additional things I want to share.
One of the things we did not go over is Foster Care.  I received the following information from one of the great PR reps I work with, Wendy Will from Wilks Communications.
“As the government looks to next year’s budget to determine funding priorities, pundits look for follow through on campaign promises like health insurance for uninsured children and improving the quality of our education system. Both are important, but neither can replace the most important resource we provide our children: the support of a loving family.
This is especially important for the 520,000 children who find themselves in the American foster care system. These children need the comfort and stability of a supportive family – but navigating the logistics of the foster care system can be an overwhelming obstacle for prospective foster parents.”
Can you believe that number?  520,000 children here in the US alone.  So, so sad.  Of course, becoming a Foster Parent is not for the faint of heart but it can make all of the difference in a child’s life, whether they are with you for a few hours, few days, few weeks or longer.  But how to start and what to know before jumping headlong into the Foster System?
Success as a Foster Parent150 520,000 in American Foster Care Can You Help? Giveaway & Review (Ended)
Opening your home with confidence is possible thanks to the guidance the National Foster Parent Association, in cooperation with author Rachel Greene Baldino, provide in Success as a Foster Parent: Everything You Need to Know about Foster Care (ISBN: 9781592577477,
$16.95, Alpha Books).
This book provides a state-by-state resource section with concrete information for prospective foster parents and answers questions like:
* How do you begin?
* Do you need training?
* What about your own family?
* How long does the process take?
* What does it cost?
Untangling the Complexity
Success as a Foster Parent helps prospective foster parents understand:
* How to research the agencies, both state and private, in your local area.
* The application and interview process.
* The financial cost and the compensation available to help.
* The challenges involved in caring for children, from infants to teens, including physically and psychologically challenged kids and those in emergency situations.
* Issues relating to schools, birth parents, supervisory visits, vacations, and dozens of other factors.
* What to consider when you’re thinking of adopting your foster child.
It also includes the compelling stories drawn from members of the National Foster Parent Association who have met the most important need of a child: that of a loving family.  This is a book that could answer all the questions you have that keep you from moving forward and approaching becoming a foster parent.
Well guess what?  I happen to have five copies of this wonderful and enlightening book to give away.

    I found all of the books about domestic foster/adopt to be of interest. The book that really caught my eye was: “Another Mother: Co-Parenting with the Foster Care System” by Sarah Gerstenzang. Since the goal is parent reunification, the job of a foster parent is to really do everything in their power to get the child back with their biological parent. However, I would be interested in reading the book to see what Sarah says.
